Citizens for Clean Air is a coalition of concerned
citizens in Oakville, Mississauga and Clarkson "Airshed" area that are
very concerned about the
impacts that will come from the proposed gas-fired power plants. Sylvia
Bowman from YSN attended this rally since Newmarket is faced with the
same gas-fired power "Peaker" Plant dilemma as the citizens in Oakville
and Mississauga.
PM 2.5 is a toxic pollutant that is discharged into the air by
gas-fired power plants. These pollutants put the environment, human
health and safety at risk. Children are particularly susceptible.
Connecticut Power Authority experienced an explosion at their
Middletown Power Plant. Only six lives were lost, but the situation
could have been much worse if the plant had not been located in a
sparsely inhabited area. This explosion potential begs the question,
"What is a safe distance to place a gas-fired power plant from schools
and homes in the event of an explosion"? |
